Every summer, the holy town of Puri witnesses the world’s most magnificent festival of sacred woodworking: the annual construction of the three giant chariots (Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana) for Ratha Yatra.
Over 1,000 logs of sacred timber (Phasi, Dhaura, Asana) are chiseled strictly without nails or metal bolts. The massive 7-foot diameter wooden wheels are assembled using traditional wooden peg interlocking techniques.
Each chariot is adorned with dozens of exquisitely hand-carved guardian deities, flying horses, and celestial drivers (Sarathi) carved by master craftsmen whose families have held this royal temple seva for centuries.
