The Legacy of Cuttack & Bhubaneswar Master Artisans in Stone Restoration

The craft of stone sculpting in Odisha has been passed down orally from father to son across hereditary artisan lineages known as Silpins and Maharanas. In Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Puri, these master artisans hold the keys to restoring our nation’s sacred heritage.

1. Non-Invasive Structural Diagnostics

Before replacing any ancient stone block, our conservation team conducts thorough non-destructive assessments. We examine internal structural stresses, foundation settlements, and mineral salt efflorescence caused by humidity.

2. Traditional Mortars vs Damaging Modern Cement

One of the fatal mistakes of modern masonry is applying Portland cement to ancient stone. Cement traps moisture and generates salts that crack historical stone. At Orient Crafts Museum, we prepare traditional hydraulic lime mortars blended with jaggery, bael fruit resin, and fine sand to allow the stone to breathe naturally.

3. Recreating Damaged Nayika & Deity Motifs

When a temple carving is lost or fractured, our master silpins sculpt exact replicas based on surviving symmetry, adjacent panels, and archival photographs. Each stroke of the hammer honors the original 11th-century sculptor’s style.

Master Craft Takeaways
