The Ancient Chariot Sculpting Traditions of Ratha Yatra in Odisha

Written by: Ranjan Maharana
Deep dive into how hundreds of hereditary Maharana silpins construct monumental wooden chariots annually.

Every summer, the holy town of Puri witnesses the world’s most magnificent festival of sacred woodworking: the annual construction of the three giant chariots (Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana) for Ratha Yatra.

1. Chariot Anatomy & Sacred Measurements

Over 1,000 logs of sacred timber (Phasi, Dhaura, Asana) are chiseled strictly without nails or metal bolts. The massive 7-foot diameter wooden wheels are assembled using traditional wooden peg interlocking techniques.

2. Ornamental Side Deities (Parswadevatas)

Each chariot is adorned with dozens of exquisitely hand-carved guardian deities, flying horses, and celestial drivers (Sarathi) carved by master craftsmen whose families have held this royal temple seva for centuries.

Master Craft Takeaways

  • 100% adherence to authentic Odissan sculptural treatises (Shilpa Shastras).
  • Hand-chiseled by hereditary master silpins in Bhubaneswar studio.
  • Natural, non-toxic organic mineral pigments and herbal sealants.
  • Worldwide insured door delivery in 3-tier wooden crates.
